Linux Introduction Course (with HPC focus) English, Summer 2021

Dear cluster users,

the next Linux Introduction course will take place on July 15, 2021. It will be held in English and take all day. It will be held online via Zoom.

Need to use Linux for your PhD/M.Sc./SHK work or privately? Are you using the OMNI cluster or another supercomputer? Never used Linux before? Then this is the course for you.

In this one-day course you will learn about the following topics:

  • Using the command line
  • The ideas behind concepts like users, files, processes and permissions
  • Navigating the Linux directory structure
  • Handling text and other files from the console
  • The vim text editor
  • A brief introduction automating tasks with shell scripting

Although this course is open to everyone, it is primarily geared towards cluster users. That means that neither Graphical User Interfaces nor topics that require root access (e.g. installation, administration) are covered. All topics covered are distro-independent.

We will be using the cluster for the exercises, but it is not necessary to have cluster access beforehand. The course is held every semester, alternating between German and English.
